Tutorial: Sew a small lined purse

small zippered purse
Sometimes all you need is something big enough to fit your keys, credit cards, and cell phones (or even a compact camera). I made these purses at the request of my best friend who was married two weeks ago (Congrats!!!) as gifts for the bridesmaids. Here's a step-by-step tutorial. This is my first sewing tutorial! Hopefully the photos will help make everything clear.

Materials:

small lined zippered purse

  • 6.5" x 6" outer material
  • 6.5" x 6" lining material
  • 7" zipper
  • 16" satin ribbon
Directions:
1. Pin the outer material to the zipper along the shorter length of fabric. Make sure it's face down.

2. Flip the zipper and material upside down and pin the lining material along the zipper. It should form a fabric sandwich with the zipper between.

3. Use a straight stitch to sew the layers to the zipper. (Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine makes this easier).

4. Fold the two layers of fabric back so that they're right side up and iron it flat.

5. Pin the other ends of the fabric to the zipper, right sides facing inside. You should end up with something like the photos below. It's a bit hard to explain.

6. Open the zipper half way and sew the fabric onto the zipper.

7. Flip the fabric right side up. It's almost looking like a purse now right?

8. Flip the purse inside out again. Stitch along one edge leaving 1/4" of fabric. Go over the zipper portion a few times then trim the excess fabric. Make sure that the zipper is open so that you can flip the purse right side out later.

9. Insert the ribbon through the opening in the zipper, making sure that the ends will be stitched when you sew up the other side of the purse. Sew along the edge leaving 1/4" of fabric then trim the excess.

Optional step: Overlock or serge the raw edges to prevent fraying.

10. Flip the purse inside out and enjoy! You're all done!

You can now add any embellishments that you like ;) I added a little chiffon rosette and leaf.

I'm not terribly good with sewing and can't quite make out what's going on in your photos because they are very small. I noticed the images are being served from Flickr. Would you mind posting a link to your Flickr stream so I can see the large versions?

Thank you for sharing your tutorial!

Hello!
I really like your how to. I was wondering if I could translate it in French and add it to my list of how to as explained in my french post (http://www.petitcitron.com/index.php/form_howto.html)
Of course, your website would be quoted and there would be a link!
Thank you,
Perrine
